“Heaven & Earth”

Ottrott, France

Two souls, one place
“The vastness of the sky” & “The quiet power of the earth”

A SPA Interior Design Project by OLENA Innenarchitektur – for the 4-Star Wellness Hotel Hostellerie Des Châteaux & SPA

In my latest SPA project, two relaxation rooms have been created in the future new building, facing each other – and yet complementing each other like two parts of a whole. Two rooms, two characters, a harmonious balance.

The first relaxation room opens to the outside – with a wide, unobstructed view of the sky, over the treetops and fields of the beautiful French town of Ottrott. Therefore, it bears the name “The vastness of the sky”.

The second oasis of calm, on the other hand, is inward-facing and opens onto the quiet roof garden – a green refuge that creates ideal conditions for deep relaxation and beautiful SPA experiences. It has been given the name “The quiet power of the earth” – in keeping with its atmosphere.

These two relaxation rooms are located directly next to each other. The aim of the planning and interior design of this SPA project was to create contrasts that reinforce each other. Different atmospheres, but a common rhythm: retreat, regeneration and silence.

A central idea in the planning was to enable privacy in the SPA without creating isolation. With textile partitions and a targeted room layout, it has been possible to create reclining areas that offer peace and discretion – and yet remain part of the whole.

This form of privacy plays a particularly important role, especially in hotel interior design.

So What Characterizes the Interior Design and the Design of these Two Relaxation Rooms?

“The vastness of the sky” – lightness, light, horizon

The interior design of this SPA area pursues a clear goal: to relieve thoughts, give relaxation and unfold the theme of air and sky.
A place where you can breathe deeply – in the truest sense of the word.

Large reclining areas, fine textiles and light wood create an atmosphere of openness. The view sweeps through the large windows – directly into the sky. This panorama is also reflected in the interior design – bright, reduced, floating. A place that radiates openness, lightness and tranquility.

The floating reclining islands are deliberately positioned freely in the room.
Rounded and enveloped by light, bright fabrics, they offer privacy – as if you were lying on a cloud. This creates protected, but not isolated retreats – like small cloud islands under the open sky.

They are held by delicate black ropes, discreetly illuminated – downwards as well as upwards – which additionally emphasizes their lightness and makes them appear almost weightless.

The reclining options are complemented by cozy relaxation niches and stylish single beds. This creates a diverse selection of different retreat and reclining options for guests – depending on their needs and mood.

Diversity in SPA Planning Can be Crucial – Especially in Larger Facilities

Because guests come with very different expectations, and a consciously designed selection of relaxation and experience areas noticeably increases satisfaction. It also enables varied experiences – especially when you stay in a wellness hotel for several days and long for variety and new impressions.

A special design element in the “Heaven” SPA relaxation room are the drop-shaped pendant lights that float above the loungers – a subtle homage to raindrops falling from the sky to the earth.
Their position is deliberately chosen: the drops seem to fall into small wooden barrels, as if they were filling them with light and movement – a quiet, poetic image in the middle of the room.

The glass, shimmering blue surfaces gently refract the light and bring fine reflections into the room.

The unusual wall lights made of blue-tinted, hand-blown glass cast abstract shadows and set heavenly accents in the room.

It is the details that take up the theme of the room and connect nature and interior design in a quiet, subtle way. This is hotel interior design as art: creating visions, making ideas visible and bringing nature into the room.

The lighting concept is complemented by atmospheric color contrasts:
A combination of cool, sky-blue ceiling light and warm background lighting creates a gentle contrast between sky and sunbeams – between clarity and security.

The wave-like wood structure on the ceiling and wall takes up the theme of “air”. It is reminiscent of wind movements or delicate cloud formations – a dynamic surface that still radiates tranquility.

Wood in natural tones, structured ceiling panels in wave form and gently used lighting create a warm, soothing atmosphere – without impairing the lightness of the room.

Another element that takes up the sky metaphor are the wall paintings made of natural wool. Their soft structure and organic shape make them appear almost like floating clouds – tangible, but not graspable.

“The Quiet Power of the Earth” –
Security in the depths.

Sometimes we need a place that simply brings us back down to earth or, as they say, “grounds” us.

How can the professional planning and interior design of a SPA achieve this goal? “The Quiet Power of the Earth” is an example of a relaxation room in which exactly that succeeds.

It is warm. Gentle. Quiet.

The eyes wander over warm wood textures, gentle curves and plant elements – a silent dialogue with nature. The interior design of the relaxation room lives from soft lines and organic forms. It combines earthy fabrics, real wood and soft shades of green – creating a calm, almost meditative sense of space.

In this project, it was particularly important to me to create a SPA Interior Design that reconnects guests with something they often lose in everyday life: with the ground under their feet, with this quiet, deep natural power that carries us – even when we don’t always feel it.

The reclining islands, round or organically curved – almost like small caves, convey protection and grounding without closing off. Enveloped by semi-transparent curtains made of coarsely structured fabrics, relaxation zones are created that are nevertheless harmoniously integrated into the overall atmosphere.

Green, brown, taupe – everything here is reminiscent of forest floors, roots, moss.
Nature is not just decoration, but the heart of the SPA concept.

This is complemented by targeted accents: hanging plants on the ceiling, vertical plant walls. It is the details that carry the theme: the filigree ceiling ornament with leaf structure, the natural feel of the materials, the recurring curves – everything speaks the language of the earth: quiet and deep.

The lighting concept in the hotel relaxation room is an equally important component of the overall concept. It is subdued and very warm – and conveys the feeling of gentle sunbeams falling through treetops.

Organically shaped pendant lights complement the lighting concept and set floating, decorative accents. Their warm light brings depth without being intrusive – it enhances the silence of this room. The indirect lighting – from the ceiling, under the loungers and along the walls – creates a light, floating effect. Almost as if you were resting on a soft clearing in the forest.

“The Quiet Power of the Earth” is an example of how interior design can be more than just design. It’s about atmosphere, materiality and sensuality – about the fact that a room can touch us without being loud.

The Dialogue between Earth and Sky

In the planning of this SPA area, I was concerned with more than just aesthetics.
For me, interior design means a holistic project development that triggers real experiences and noticeable experiences for the guests.

“The Quiet Power of the Earth” invites you to arrive within yourself. The materiality, the colors, the shapes – everything here conveys grounding, retreat and security.
“The Vastness of the Sky”, on the other hand, opens the senses. Light, view, lightness – a room to let go, to dream.

As part of the hotel project, two relaxation rooms were created that face each other, contrasting in their effect – and at the same time coordinated with each other. Two rooms, two atmospheres – deliberately designed as a contrasting pair and yet part of a common whole.

Two different SPA experiences that become spatially tangible through precise planning decisions: in the selection of materials, the lighting design, the zoning, the acoustics and the visual guidance.

Both concepts were developed in close connection with the structural structure of the new SPA building. The orientation of the windows, the routing, the incidence of daylight – all of this was integrated into the interior design at an early stage.

The planning ran parallel to the vision – not afterwards. In this way, design and function could grow together to form a harmonious whole.

In addition to the aesthetic and atmospheric effect, the functional quality of these two relaxation rooms also plays a central role. Different room concepts make it possible to specifically address the needs of a wide variety of guest types – whether someone is looking for retreat and silence or prefers to enjoy openness and vastness.

Especially in a high-quality wellness hotel, this diverse quality of stay is a decisive factor for the satisfaction of the guests – and thus also for the long-term success of the house.
Well-thought-out room planning, well-coordinated processes and clear zoning ensure well-being and smoothly functioning use in day-to-day operations.

OLENA Innenarchitektur , as an experienced interior designer and planner in the hotel and SPA sector, stands for well-thought-out functionality, design depth and a deep understanding of hotel operations. Thanks to sound knowledge in holistic SPA planning, complex projects with a high recognition value are created – individual, harmonious and sustainable in operation. The development of the “Heaven and Earth” relaxation rooms shows how a clear vision and precise planning can create a SPA area with a strong identity and functional depth.
